Qualifications

  NATIONAL CERTIFICATE IN EDUCATIONAL ACHIEVEMENT

The NCEA is a general certificate based on credit total rather than on specific Unit Standards or Achievement Standards. However it does have Literacy and Numeracy requirements.

NCEA (Level 1)
80 credits (from Unit Standards or Achievement Standards) at Level 1, including 8 Literacy credits and 8 Numeracy credits.
The Literacy and Numeracy credits can be achieved in any of the Year 11 English or Mathematics courses.

NCEA (Level 2)
A minimum of 80 credits, of which 60 must be at Level 2, (i.e. 60 at Level 2 and 20 at Level 1 will do). There is no specific Literacy or Numeracy requirement for NCEA (Level 2).

NCEA (Level 3)
A minimum of 80 credits, of which 60 must be at Level 3, (i.e. 60 at Level 3 and 20 at Level 2 will do). There is no specific Literacy or Numeracy requirement for NCEA (Level 3).

Effectively, you can upgrade the NCEA from one level to the next with 60 credits at the higher level. You do not need to have completed the NCEA at a lower level to achieve it at a higher level.

NATIONAL CERTIFICATE IN EMPLOYMENT SKILLS (NCES Level 1)

Marlborough Boys' College also offers this Certificate from the National Qualifications Framework.
It was developed in consultation with industries and employers and is designed to provide students with a range of employment skills. It is taught at all polytechnics, institutes of technology and some secondary schools.

Course Content
The compulsory section of the Certificate has three themes.

  • Numeracy – will be covered in the MAT101 course.
  • Communication Skills – will be done in English classes
  • Core Skills – will be covered in association with MAT101 and SCI101 courses. They include topics such as employment rights and responsibilities, employer expectations, personal presentation, keyboard skills and career planning.

Because they can be cross-credited, all credits earned for this certificate can also be counted towards the NCEA (Level 1). Therefore the NCEA can be achieved without it necessarily being your main focus.

By focusing on NCES, you can follow a course of study that may be more appropriate for your needs and at the same time help create a foundation to build on with other certificates in later years.

The College will identify those students for whom it considers the NCES should be their main focus in Year 11.
This will involve their placement in appropriate English, Mathematics and Science courses.

OTHER NATIONAL CERTIFICATES

Marlborough Boys' College also offers a number of other National Certificates from the National Qualifications Framework.

Most National Certificates have a core of compulsory Unit Standards in the subject area of the certificate and require additional credits from elsewhere on the Qualifications Framework, which can be achieved from other courses being taken. Because they can be cross-credited, all credits earned in these certificates can also be counted towards the NCEA at the appropriate level. Therefore the NCEA can be achieved without it necessarily being your main focus.

By focusing on one of these National Certificates, you can follow a course of study that is appropriate for your needs, skills, interests or possible career field. This may be the best approach for many students. For example, if a particular National Certificate has a completed credit value of 60 credits then these credits will automatically count towards an NCEA. It is then just a matter of achieving the extra credits from other subjects to also complete your NCEA qualification at the same time.

Students who are not committed to going to University to study for a degree should seriously consider including at least one National Certificate in their study programme while at Marlborough Boys' College.
